Local Politics for the Week of September 14–20

The local government calendar is once again packed this week with nine meetings. Among others, the Planning Committee and the City Council will meet this week to discuss topics ranging from the budget situation to the Regiotram.

Tuesday, September 15

The Sports Committee meeting will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the conference room at Haus Löwenstein. ALRV projects related to the Soers Sports Park will be presented, the expanded planning resolution for the construction of two new underground single-field gymnasiums with a seven-group daycare center on Franzstraße will be discussed, and the phasing out of the city’s artificial turf program in favor of additional renovations of artificial turf fields will be addressed.

The Works Council for Building Management will meet at 5:00 p.m. in the conference room of the Aachen-Eilendorf District Office on Heinrich-Thomas-Platz. Key items on the agenda include: the report on the City of Aachen’s mineral water operations, the presentation of the “KreislaufWIRKstatt Aachen” grant project, and the report on ongoing and planned construction projects as part of the “Perspektive Richterich” initiative.

The Citizens’ Forum meeting will continue at 5:00 p.m. in the council chamber. Following a question-and-answer session for residents, suggestions and complaints will be discussed in accordance with the North Rhine-Westphalia Municipal Code, including the green arrow for bicycle traffic (Sign 721) at the intersection of Boxgraben, Krakaustraße, and Südstraße, as well as the citizens’ petition calling for the inclusion of non-binary individuals.

The Nature Conservation Advisory Board will meet in the Campus conference room (Room SG113) at Maria-Theresia-Allee 38, also at 5:00 p.m. In addition to the presentation of the chairperson’s report on public participation cases, there will also be a discussion regarding exemptions from the prohibitions set forth in the City of Aachen’s 1988 Landscape Plan for the construction of informationand design elements as part of the cross-border archaeological landscape park in the municipality of Simpelveld (NL) in collaboration with the City of Aachen (Charlemagne Border Region Consortium).

Finally, the Housing and Real Estate Committee will also meet in Room 207 of the Mozartstraße administrative building at 5:00 p.m. The 2026 Housing Market Report will be presented at this meeting. In addition, a council motion regarding the “Development of the ‘Christus unser Friede’ Parcel” and the integrated urban development concept “Zukunft Forst” will be discussed.

Wednesday, September 16

The Aachen City Council meeting begins at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall meeting room. A key topic at this meeting is the conclusion of a consortium agreement for Regiotram Aachen Infrastrukturgesellschaft mbH. The meeting will also address the integrated urban development concept “Zukunft Forst” and the 2026 budget freeze.

Thursday, September 17

The Culture, Theater, and Adult Education Committee will meet starting at 5:00 p.m. in Room 207 of the Mozartstraße administrative building. The Aachen Contact and Information Center for Self-Help (akis) will be presented. Plans for urban development in the Büchel Old Town district, including the area around the Haus der Neugier, will also be discussed. Following the conclusion of the World Equestrian Games, follow-up reports on the independent arts scene’s program and the schrit_tmacher Festival will also be presented.

The Planning Committee will meet at 5:00 p.m. in the City Council chamber. There, based on the 2025 annual report, policymakers will decide on the future work program for urban development funding. In addition, the committee will adopt an expanded planning resolution regarding the construction of the two gyms and the daycare center on Franzstraße and will approve the zoning plans for “Freunder Weg / Eisenbahn,” “Freunder Weg / Zeppelinstraße,” and “Oberforstbacher Straße / Auf dem Anger.”

Finally, the Committee on Digitalization will also meet at 5:00 p.m. in the Campus Conference Room (Room SG113) at Maria-Theresia-Allee 38. The agenda includes: A guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Bernhard on AI-supported guidance for citizens through administrative processes, the allocation of unscheduled budget funds for the “Replacement of the School Account Statement (SKGB)” project, and a discussion on updating the City of Aachen’s digital strategy.
