The first municipal fountains are sent into "hibernation"
As is the case every fall, Aachen’s fountains will be put into “hibernation” in the coming weeks. Soon, the stream-fed fountains in Aachen’s Old Town will stop flowing. The city and Regionetz are working hand in hand on this. The water feature along Lindenplatz and the Triton Fountain in Aachen’s Südviertel district are already out of service. Next, the fountain maintenance team from the city’s building management department will take care of the remaining fountains one by one. By early November, all remaining fountains fed by the municipal water supply—starting from the outskirts and extending into the city center—are expected to be taken out of service. The water fountains at Europaplatz will be the last to be shut off. The city’s fountains traditionally emerge from hibernation around Easter.
The fountains at Elisengarten (the Elisen Fountain and the “Circulation of Money” fountain) and at the Neues Kurhaus operate completely regardless of freezing temperatures. These fountains are supplied with warm thermal water and can therefore remain in operation even during the winter months. In total, the Building Management Department currently operates about 65 municipal water features.
