New Commemorative Plaque Honors the History of the “Kinkebahn”
A piece of German-Belgian border history is being brought to light and explained: With the ceremonial unveiling of an informational plaque, the history and historical significance of the “Kinkebahn” will be commemorated in the future.
Residents, hikers, and cyclists can now gain fascinating insights into the history of this old road connection. A QR code on the sign provides access to a detailed account of its historical background. The new sign was mounted on a previously unused stele. This project was made possible through the collaboration of numerous associations, institutions, and dedicated individuals. Support was provided by the Kornelimünster Local History and Eifel Association, the Hahn/Friesenrath Citizens’ and History Association, the Eynatten Archives Group, Aachen City Marketing, the Kornelimünster/Walheim District Office, STAWAG, the Aachen Adult Education Center (VHS), and the company Pro Graphics.
A significant portion of the funding comes from a special initiative: District Mayor Jakob von Thenen and his deputies, Reinhard Plum and Ladislaus Hoffner, have for years refrained from accepting gifts when attending events hosted by clubs and institutions. Instead, they use the funds saved on such expenses each year to support special projects in the Kornelimünster/Walheim district. The new commemorative plaque also benefited from this.
At the ceremonial unveiling of the information plaque, District Mayor Jakob von Thenen praised the significance of the project: “The new commemorative plaque is a wonderful example of how personal commitment, cross-border cooperation, and targeted support can help preserve a piece of our shared history for the future. Europe thrives on its people, its encounters, its friendships, and its cohesion across borders.”
