Tarantula Released in Haaren
On Tuesday morning (October 13), employees at the Haaren District Office made an unusual discovery. Unknown individuals had abandoned a tarantula in front of the District Office. Inside a plastic bag were the terrarium containing the animal and a bag of “Spider Ground.”
The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the City of Aachen has taken the animal into its care for further examination. Its exact species and state of health are currently being determined. The tarantula will then be placed in expert and safe care.
Depending on the species, tarantulas can live for many years—in some cases, several decades. By purchasing a tarantula, owners assume a long-term responsibility to provide species-appropriate care and housing. Under no circumstances should these animals be abandoned or left behind. Anyone who can no longer care for an animal should contact a suitable specialized facility or the relevant authority in a timely manner. Some tarantula species are subject to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Depending on the species, specific proof of origin, documentation requirements, or additional certificates under species protection laws may be necessary. Violations of applicable regulations may result in fines or, in certain cases, criminal penalties.
The Lower Nature Conservation Authority recommends finding out about the conservation status and legal requirements for each species before making a purchase.
