A sign of solidarity: relief supplies from Aachen on their way to Chernihiv
The willingness of the people of Aachen to donate has made it possible: another transport with relief supplies is on its way to the Ukrainian twin town of Chernihiv. The truck, loaded with care beds, equipment for medical rehabilitation measures and equipment for Aachen's fire department, left the City of Aachen's depot in Liebigstraße on Thursday, March 19, with active help from the dedicated employees of Aachen's municipal services.
Most of the supplies will be delivered to Ukraine as part of the "Civil Protection and Reconstruction in Municipal Partnerships with Ukraine" program of the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The City of Aachen - supported by the SKEW's "Municipal Development Cooperation" project - is working in close coordination with Chernihiv to provide targeted support. So far, two vehicles, a solar bench, a scissor lift, complete playground equipment and several pieces of fitness equipment with a total value of around 180,000 euros have been transferred to Chernihiv.
The requirements were coordinated in advance by the GIZ, which is responsible for implementation on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The transport of the relief supplies was made possible by donations from the citizens of Aachen and organized with the support of the experienced Blue-Yellow Cross Association, which has already accompanied numerous transports to Ukraine.
Partnership since 2022
The partnership between Aachen and Chernihiv began in October 2022 on the initiative of the "Ukrainians in Aachen" association. The city of Chernihiv, located north-east of Kiev, was heavily destroyed at the beginning of the war. In December 2022, Aachen's city council unanimously approved the official solidarity partnership. Since then, there have been numerous exchanges and aid deliveries, including vehicles that are being used directly for reconstruction.
The city of Aachen remains firmly at the side of its Ukrainian twin city and is committed to the reconstruction and support of the population in Chernihiv.
