Eupener Straße: Renovation of the footpath and cycle path extended until June
The North Rhine-Westphalia road construction authority has announced that the footpath and cycle path along Eupener Straße in Aachener Wald is not expected to be completed and reopened until the beginning of June 2026. The delay is due to the fact that the work on the supply lines under the footpath and cycle path has so far been very complex and extensive. In addition, the weather this winter was such that the construction work had to be interrupted time and again.
The renovation of Eupener Straße, the B57 federal highway, began in mid-November 2025. First, the accompanying footpath and cycle path on the B57 between the German-Belgian border and the entrance to the city of Aachen will be completely renovated in several sections over a length of around two kilometers.
Car traffic will be guided past the construction site in the respective construction phases with the help of construction site traffic lights on both sides. A detour specifically for bicycle traffic is signposted through the Aachener Wald via Pommerotter Weg, Brückchenweg, Monschauer Straße (L 233 country road), Grüne Eiche and Augustinerweg in both directions. Pedestrians will find shorter routes on the hiking trails through the Aachen Forest.
Following the work on the footpath and cycle path, the asphalt surface of Eupener Straße will be repaired. The road will be completely closed to vehicle traffic for this. Information on the exact period of the full closure and the detour route is expected to be published by the state road authority StraßenNRW in May 2026. The renovation of Eupener Straße is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026.
