Claßenstraße: City Plans to Reduce Accidents at High-Risk Intersection with a Median Island
In the area around Claßenstraße and Republikplatz, the police have recorded 14 accidents since 2023. Five of these accidents occurred while crossing Claßenstraße between the intersection with Intzestraße and a side street at Republikplatz. The area has been classified as an accident-prone zone by the accident commission.
To reduce the risk of accidents at this accident-prone location, the Accident Commission has proposed installing a median island between Intzestraße and the intersection. This idea will be tested over the next few weeks. To this end, a median island has been temporarily marked on the roadway with paint and appropriately signposted. The signal sequence for the traffic lights at the intersection of Claßenstraße, Seffenter Weg, and Bunsenstraße has been adjusted.
The reported accidents are similar in nature but occur throughout the entire intersection area. Motor vehicles heading toward Turmstraße come into conflict with pedestrians and cyclists crossing the intersection, and accidents occur because the situation is confusing. In addition, the traffic light timing at the intersection has so far been unattractive, particularly for pedestrians, due to short green phases.
The administration will monitor the impact of the new traffic configuration, which includes a temporary median, over the next few weeks and assess whether the new traffic plan on Claßenstraße is feasible and well-received. The administration will report the results to policymakers.
In June 2026, the political bodies were informed about the temporary median strip and the trial phase scheduled for the coming weeks.
