"Clever Renovation" Contest: Submit your application now with sustainable and forward-looking renovation projects.
Until September 1, altbau plus e.V. is seeking residents who have renovated their homes in a particularly sustainable and forward-looking manner for the “Clever Renovated” competition. The goal of the competition, commissioned by the City of Aachen and the Aachen Urban Region, is to highlight the commitment of homeowners and to publicly recognize exemplary renovation projects. The competition is under the patronage of Aachen’s Mayor Dr. Michael Ziemons and City Region Councilor Dr. Tim Grüttemeier. Prizes and gift certificates worth up to 1,000 euros will be awarded in three categories. In addition, all participants will receive a plaque that can be displayed on their residential building.
“The best ideas for climate protection often emerge where creative minds are given space and support. These pioneers deserve visibility and recognition—and that is exactly what the ‘Clever Saniert’ competition stands for,” explains Mayor Ziemons. City Regional Councilor Grüttemeier adds: “Renovating an old building is challenging. Tradespeople and homeowners must always find individual and clever solutions. With this competition, we want to support everyone in this process, because the effects of successful renovations are very positive for the environment as well as for the community in the neighborhoods.”
“Every day in our consultations, we see how proud people are that they’ve renovated their homes and made them ready for the future. They often become ambassadors who share their experiences with their neighbors and inspire others,” explains Michael Schmitz of altbau plus e.V.
Categories, Evaluation Criteria, and Jury Meeting
: The altbau plus association will assist participants in completing the application form until September 1. It is possible to apply in multiple categories, but the award will then be given in only one category. The following evaluation criteria are considered in the three categories:
- Smart renovations – reduced emissions:
The award recognizes residential buildings that have achieved particularly significant energy and CO2 savings through renovation. The evaluation focuses in particular on thermal insulation, the use of solar energy, and the replacement of fossil fuel-based heating systems.
- Smart renovations – Environmentally conscious actions
The award recognizes renovation and remodeling projects that meet environmental standards. Criteria for evaluation include resource-efficient construction methods, the use of recycled or reusable building materials and components, and measures to adapt to climate change.
- Smart Renovation – Inspiring the Neighborhood
This category focuses on people who, by renovating their homes, also strengthen community engagement in their neighborhood. Criteria include neighborhood involvement, the degree of innovation, the sustainability of the initiative, and its potential for replication in other neighborhoods.
Awards Ceremony in OctoberThe
jury will meet in late September, so the official awards ceremony will take place in October. All applicants will be invited to attend, and the winning projects will be presented to the public.
