Local politics in the week from June 8 to 14
The coming week has a varied program in store for Aachen's local politics: various district councils and committees will be meeting, including the committees for the environment and climate protection, housing and real estate, children and youth, schools and education as well as mobility. It promises to be an informative and varied week of meetings.
Tuesday, June 9
The Committee on the Environment and Climate Protection will meet at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Aachen City Hall. Among other items on the agenda is the area between the Am Tivoli residential district to the south and Soerser Weg to the west. To enable development of the area, it is to be designated as a special zone with the designated use “sports, recreation, and culture.” In addition, current status reports on flood resilience and heat action planning in Aachen will be presented.
The Housing and Real Estate Committee will also meet starting at 5:00 p.m. in the Marschiertor administrative building on Lagerhausstraße. This committee will decide on matters concerning the housing association, report on the current status of the Integrated Master Plan for the Bushof Quarter, and discuss the implementation of “turbo planning procedures.”
At the same time, the Children and Youth Committee is convening in the administrative building on Mozartstraße. One topic on the agenda is the installation of drinking fountains and misting systems at playgrounds in Aachen. In this context, it should be noted that the Aachen-Brand district council has decided against installing misting systems at playgrounds for cost reasons. Also on the agenda is the implementation of open all-day schools to offer extracurricular activities.
Wednesday, June 10
The Aachen-Brand District Council will meet at 5 p.m. at the district office on Paul-Küpper-Platz. The council will discuss measures to address a hazardous situation at the exit of the Vennbahncenter onto Trierer Straße. Additionally, the school development plan for the elementary school level and the use of misting systems on playgrounds will be discussed.
The Aachen-Kornelimünster/Walheim District Council will also meet at 5:00 p.m. at the district office on Schulberg. In addition, the current status of flood resilience in Aachen as well as the further planning and implementation of the overall concept for expanding the charging infrastructure in the district will be discussed.
The Aachen-Mitte District Council will meet in the council chamber starting at 5 p.m. The council will discuss possible changes to Soerser Weg to ensure that cyclists can use the entire length of the optional bike path leading into the city. Also on the agenda are the implementation of a field trial in Burtscheid and the renovation of the pedestrian bridge on Krefelder Straße.
At 6 p.m., the Aachen-Richterich District Council will meet at Schönau Castle on Schönauer Allee. The meeting will discuss an amendment to the land-use plan for the controlled expansion of wind energy in Aachen. The meeting will also address a report on current and planned projects in Richterich, as well as the next steps regarding the Euregio bike expressway.
The Aachen-Haaren District Council meeting will also begin at 6 p.m. at the community center on Germanustraße. The council members will first discuss the Aachen Adult Education Center’s (VHS) activities and programs in the Haaren district with the center’s director, Dr. Beate Blüggel. They will also speak with members of the newly founded association in Verlautenheide, “V-Team e.V.” In addition, a decision is to be made regarding the renovation of the artificial turf field at the Heider-Hof-Weg sports complex.

The meeting of the Committee on Schools and Education will begin at 5 p.m. in the administrative building on Mozartstraße. In addition, the committee will discuss the digitization of the application process for reimbursement of student transportation costs.
At the same time, the Mobility Committee will convene in the Council Chamber, this time also in its capacity as the AVV Advisory Board for the City of Aachen. Here, too, the committee will discuss the changes to Soerser Weg for cyclists heading into the city. In addition, a report will be given on the current status of the planned construction project on Lütticher Straße between Limburger Straße and Amsterdamer Ring.
