Aachen City Champions: 38 Teams Celebrate Their Athletic Achievements
Loud cheers and applause filled the auditorium of St. Ursula High School: As part of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics & Paralympics” competition, the City of Aachen’s Department of Sports, together with Aachen’s schools, honored the athletic achievements of 38 city champion teams from a total of ten Aachen schools this year. The students were awarded medals and trophies—sponsored by NetAachen—as well as certificates.
The Aachen city champions were determined through numerous competitions in the following sports: badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, soccer, handball, track and field, swimming, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball. One mixed team, five girls’ teams, and four boys’ teams from various competitive divisions celebrated successes beyond Aachen: In beach volleyball, soccer, handball, table tennis, and volleyball, they won their district championship rounds. The most successful team from the city of Aachen was the girls’ team from St. Leonhard Gymnasium, which even took third place in the state finals in the U16 girls’ volleyball division.
With approximately 800,000 participating children and teenagers each year, the “Youth Trains for the Olympics & Paralympics” school sports competition is the largest of its kind in the world. Every year, Germany’s best schools compete in 26 sports in the national school competition.
