Weather conditions: Municipal cemeteries are closed, waste collection partially restricted

Due to the poor weather conditions, the municipal cemeteries will be closed for safety reasons from Wednesday afternoon, January 7, until probably Monday, January 12. Funerals will take place as planned; the funeral paths will be cleared and gritted and the mourners will be accompanied by employees of the municipal services.

Waste collection
Due to the different road conditions, the heavy waste collection vehicles of the municipal services could not enter all residential streets yesterday, Tuesday, January 6, and partly also today, Wednesday, January 7. As a result, waste collection was only partially carried out. Cancelled collections will be made up successively on the next scheduled collection days in the coming week.

The persistently low temperatures have also led to the organic waste garbage cans freezing up in places. The municipal company asks that, if possible, the bins are only put out in the morning shortly before the start of waste collection at 7 a.m. and that the contents of the bins are loosened beforehand - for example with a spade. Crumpled newspaper or egg cartons at the bottom of the bin absorb moisture from the waste. Damp waste can also be wrapped in newspaper.

However, hot water should not be poured over the frozen organic waste, as it cools down quickly in appropriate weather conditions and causes the contents of the bin to freeze even more.

For the sixth day in a row, the winter service team from Aachen's municipal services are out in full force in the city of Aachen, ensuring safe conditions on roads, paths and squares. From 3 a.m. to 10 p.m., the drivers of the winter road clearance service will be pushing and gritting the roads with a total of 90 vehicles, including large gritting vehicles, small gritting vehicles and tractors, and ensuring safe conditions on around 1,200 roads with a length of around 1,500 kilometers throughout the city. In addition, there is the manual winter service, which ensures road safety at 460 locations such as intersections, pedestrian zones and crosswalks, bridges and stairways. In total, more than 300 employees are deployed in winter services.
