New Head of the Department of Urban Development and Urban Planning Has Been Appointed
The new head of the Department of Urban Development and Urban Planning (FB 61) has arrived: Iris Wiemann-Enkler began her duties with the City of Aachen today, Monday, August 17. Wiemann-Enkler is moving from Trier on the Moselle to the Imperial City. There, she served as head of the City Planning Office for the past 18 years.
City Planning Commissioner Frauke Burgdorff, whose department oversees Division 61, says: “I am very pleased that we have been able to recruit someone who is thoroughly familiar with all the key issues in the field of urban development and urban planning. From regional planning to historic preservation and urban design, all the way to land development and urban land-use planning, she has demonstrated in Trier how successful and collaborative work can be achieved. She will lead the department in this spirit.”
Wiemann-Enkler is looking forward to her new role: “Many exciting challenges await me in Aachen. Together with a highly professional and motivated team, I would like to contribute my professional experience—which I’ve had the privilege of gaining over many years in Germany’s oldest city—to the development of the city of Aachen in the best way possible.”
Mayor Dr. Michael Ziemons expressly welcomes the new addition to the department’s leadership and views it as a valuable asset for the department’s future work. At the same time, he thanks everyone involved who has taken on this task over the past two years with courage and great dedication. Together with the new department head, he wishes the team every success and many successful urban development projects for Aachen.
There are several such projects in the city: Richtericher Dell, the residential area on Grauenhofer Weg, and the Integrated Development Concept for Forst are just a few examples. The department also designs and coordinates the development of Theaterplatz and the Büchel Old Town district. In addition, numerous zoning plans and so-called “Section 34 permits” are being prepared to enable the creation of urgently needed residential, research, and commercial sites.
The department, which includes the divisions of “Administration,” “Historic Preservation and Archaeology,” “Urban Development,” “Urban Planning,” and “Urban Renewal and Design,” has a staff of 60.
