Archaeological finds on Theaterplatz: exhibition opens on April 29
Aachen's Theaterplatz is changing: since January 2025, pipes and sewers have been replaced underground. Surprising archaeological finds have come to light in the process. Graves, remains of walls and everyday objects tell of the history of the site and the people who lived here for centuries. The archaeological work, including some original finds, will be highlighted in an exhibition at the Planbar, Theaterplatz 7, from April 29. Opening hours are Tuesdays to Saturdays from 3 to 6 pm. The exhibition "Traces of history. Historical finds on Theaterplatz" runs until 1 July.
Experts from the excavation company SK ArcheoConsult worked closely with the city's archaeology department to make and meticulously document the sensational finds. The findings to date are now being presented to the general public. "I am delighted that we can now open this exhibition to all citizens thanks to the efforts of many dedicated people. I would like to express my thanks to the volunteers of the Aachen Archaeology Working Group, who have made the extensive opening hours in the Planbar on Theaterplatz possible," says City Councillor Frauke Burgdorff.
About the findings: In
the 13th century, two monastery complexes were built in the area of today’s theater and its surrounding buildings. Remains of these were uncovered last year. “Beneath the northern block of houses at Theaterplatz and Kapuzinergraben lay the Christenserinnen Convent, which was demolished in 1899, and on the adjacent southern theater forecourt stood the original Webbegarden Convent, which became a Capuchin monastery in 1615,” explains city archaeologist Andreas Schaub. In addition to the various excavated wall remains, it was above all the discovery of the monastery cemetery—including numerous skeletal remains—that caused a public sensation.
