Eupener Straße: footpath and cycle path being renovated

The North Rhine-Westphalia road construction authority (Straßen.NRW) will begin renovating the footpath and cycle path on Eupener Straße (federal highway B 57) between the city limits and the German-Belgian border next Monday, November 17. The footpath and cycle path, which runs parallel to the main road, will be completely renewed over a length of around two kilometers.

The footpath and cycle path between the junctions of Pommerotter Weg and Augustinerweg/Rotsiefweg will be closed during the entire construction work, which is expected to last in several sections until the end of February 2026.

A detour specifically for cyclists will be signposted through the Aachener Wald via Pommerotter Weg, Brückchenweg, Monschauer Straße (L 233 country road), Grüne Eiche and Augustinerweg in both directions. Pedestrians will find shorter routes on the hiking trails through the Aachen Forest.

In order to safely carry out the construction work on the footpath and cycle path, Eupener Straße will be closed on one side in each construction section. Traffic will be guided past the construction site with traffic lights on both sides. If it is possible in the evening, at night and at weekends during the construction-free period in the interests of road safety, the roadworks traffic lights will be switched off and the lane narrowing will be removed in order to keep the restrictions for traffic on the B57 as low as possible.

Following the renovation of the footpath and cycle path, the carriageway of the B57 on the same section of road will be renewed with a full road closure. This work is expected to take two weeks and will be completed in March or April 2026.

The costs for the renovation of the footpath, cycle path and roadway amount to around 2.1 million euros.
