Rebekka Seubert becomes the new director of the Ludwig Forum Aachen

The Aachen City Council appointed Rebekka Seubert as the new director of the Ludwig Forum Aachen at its meeting on November 5. The curator and cultural scientist, who is currently still Artistic Director of the Dortmunder Kunstverein, had prevailed in a multi-stage selection process. She will take up her position on March 1, 2026, succeeding Eva Birkenstock, who moved to the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover this summer.

Head of Cultural Affairs Heinrich Brötz explains: "Ms. Seubert has confidently asserted herself in a demanding process with her high level of professional and social competence, her fresh ideas and her diverse view of the Ludwig Forum concept. I am very much looking forward to working with her."

"With Rebekka Seubert, the Ludwig Forum will have an experienced curator and leader as well as a cultural scientist with a proven track record in cooperation, fundraising and new projects as director. An excellent choice! Thank you very much for allowing us as the Ludwig Foundation to be involved," adds Carla Cugini, Managing Director of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation.

In addition to Carla Cugini, Anja Dorn, Director of the Leopold Hoesch Museum in Düren, Felix Krämer, General Director and Artistic Director of the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, Karola Kraus, General Director of the Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok) and Alexander Markschies, Professor of Art History at the RWTH in Aachen and Chairman of the Friends of the Ludwig Forum, were also represented on the selection committee.

Rebekka Seubert accepted her appointment with great pleasure: "I am very much looking forward to the exciting task of leading the Ludwig Forum into its next chapter and shaping it together with the team, the circle of friends and stakeholders in urban society. In the coming years, I would like to build on the good work of my predecessors. My goal is to use art to engage and inspire people in the city and beyond in a dialog."

Rebekka Seubert studied German-French Studies with a focus on institutions and culture at the Universities of Regensburg and Clermont-Ferrand as well as Fine Arts at the Brussels école de recherche graphique (erg) and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HfbK) Hamburg. In addition to curatorial assistantships at Portikus, Frankfurt a.M., and the Bonner Kunstverein, she taught for two years at the HfbK Hamburg and initiated her own curatorial projects, including an exhibition series with productions by Georges Adéagbo (2019) and Lucy Raven (2018) at the Warburg Haus, Hamburg. From 2018 she was co-director of the Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg. Since 2020 she has been Artistic Director and Managing Director of the Dortmunder Kunstverein. Her program has received several awards (*WESTSTERN Förderpreis 2025, ADKV/Art Cologne Preis 2023) and included numerous new productions and international collaborations.
