City has traffic lights converted to LED technology

There are 231 traffic lights in the city of Aachen. The technology at some of these traffic lights is now outdated and needs to be replaced. Lamps are failing more and more frequently and need to be replaced.

Therefore, all signal systems without LED technology will be converted in the course of 2025. They will be completely equipped with energy-saving LED lamps. If necessary, the control unit of the system will also be replaced. This means that all renewed systems can be connected to the traffic computer in future. Acceleration for buses will also be installed where appropriate.

The traffic lights at the following junctions will be converted to LED technology over the next few weeks:

  • Halifaxstrasse/Melatener Strasse
  • Vaalser Straße/Hanbrucher Straße
  • Lütticher Straße/Sanatoriumstraße
  • Oppenhoffallee/Haßlerstraße
  • Adalbertsteinweg/Goerdelerstraße
  • Von-Coels-Straße/Severinstraße
  • Von-Coels-Straße/Freunder Straße
  • Verlautenheider Straße/Gut-Knapp-Straße
  • Aachener Straße/Oberforstbacher Straße

The conversion will take around two days in each case. For the duration of the conversion, a construction site signal system will be set up at the larger junctions in advance. The traffic lights at the following junctions have already been renewed: Halifaxstraße/ Ahornstraße, Vaalser Straße/An der Junkersmühle and Lütticher Straße/ Amsterdamer Ring.

After the conversion, fewer lamp failures are expected. Should a lamp nevertheless fail, citizens can continue to report this via the City of Aachen's defect reporting portal: https://maengelmelder.aachen.de. Suggestions or comments about the signal systems can also be made here. These will be checked and implemented by the traffic engineering team if possible.

In urban areas, traffic signal control has a decisive influence on traffic flow throughout the entire road network. Traffic signal systems are used to increase road safety for all road users and to improve the quality of traffic flow for motor vehicles of all kinds. However, traffic signal control is also an important instrument for speeding up public transport. The city will continue to invest in its traffic signal systems in the coming years.
