Balanced mobility in Aachen: Third topic for the Citizens' Council is set
On Tuesday evening, March 25, the representatives of the Citizens' Forum decided on the topic for the third Aachen Citizens' Council by a large majority: "Balanced mobility in Aachen: How is it possible to consider all the needs of the different road users when making transport policy decisions? Which specific measures are effective in achieving a balanced coexistence?".
For Lord Mayor Sibylle Keupen, this decision raises an extremely topical and important issue: "Mobility should be a benefit for everyone - convenient, safe and environmentally friendly. Our aim is to enable the different modes of transportation to coexist on an equal footing. I am therefore delighted that the Citizens' Council 2025 is dedicated to a topic that affects us all. I am looking forward to the ideas and recommendations."
In the run-up to the event, citizens from Aachen submitted a total of 38 topic proposals via the city's participation portal and by telephone. More than 1,000 Aachen residents then voted on them: 24 of these proposals reached the necessary quorum of 125 supporters, four more were submitted by the administration. There were 12 different questions on the topic of mobility alone. The committee accompanying the Citizens' Assembly, which is made up of former members of the Citizens' Assembly, used a decision matrix to develop five final topics, which were publicly discussed at the Citizens' Forum.
Next step: Invitation to participate
In the coming weeks, the Citizens' Council team will invite 3,500 randomly selected Aachen residents to take part in the Citizens' Council. From the responses, the colleagues will select a diverse panel of 56 participants by drawing lots: representative of the city's population. The third Aachen Citizens' Council will meet in the summer. The aim is to jointly develop recommendations that will then be incorporated into the political decision-making process.
