Culture on your doorstep: Stadtglühen celebrates summer in the city
- From July 18 to August 17, the independent cultural scene will once again bring art and culture to life free of charge throughout the city.
- Over 100 events attract visitors every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for four weeks.
- The program of the current summer cultural festival was made possible by renewed funding from politicians and the city of Aachen in the amount of 350,000 euros.
Following the great success of the last few years, the "Stadtglühen" festival will continue: from July 18 to August 17, the independent cultural scene will bring art and culture to life for the fifth time at a wide variety of locations throughout the city free of charge. It "glows" at various locations in the city center and the city districts with performances from cabaret, comedy, readings, theater, dance, visual arts, street performances, including special program items for children.
Program over four weeks at many locations
Around 100 events will captivate visitors every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for four weeks. It starts on the first weekend in the Elisengarten, followed by events in Frankenberger Park, Templergraben, Schlosspark in Richterich, Gut Kullen, Salvatorkirche, but also in Walheim. Eilendorf, Haaren or in the Brander Eschepark. In addition to the main stage, there will also be "side program" offers this year, for example, young people from Circus Configurani will be on site to practice tricks with children.
Immerse yourself in exciting formats
Shortly before the kick-off on 18 July, Lord Mayor Sibylle Keupen was already full of anticipation: "It's very nice to see how the program has stabilized. The Stadtglühen has become a perennial favorite." The special thing about Stadtglühen is that it takes place in so many different places in the districts. "The Stadtglühen goes to places where culture is not a matter of course," said Keupen. Everyone is invited to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy culture for free. "This is a great offer, especially for people who can't go on vacation in the summer. Culture right on your doorstep with actors from the region," said the Lord Mayor. "Many thanks again this year to the Musikbunker Aachen association for bringing the independent cultural scene together again and creating a valuable, low-threshold framework with so many different forms of culture."
This offer is once again made possible by funding from politicians and the city of Aachen amounting to 350,000 euros for the summer cultural festival of the independent scene. "I am delighted that these funds will enable us to make access to all events free of charge, as in previous years," said Rainer Beck, Head of the city's event management department.
Beck promises a really wide-ranging, alternative cultural program: "This year we have a special mix of well-known local heroes and many new artists." Beck is particularly looking forward to the street art part: in Frankenberger Park, "city spraying" is once again part of the Stadtglühen. On August 16 and 17, a "Detective Show" will take place here, where visitors will use clues to find art in public spaces - geo-caching with art. This idea was inspired by the artist John Fekner, who staged a similar art event in Gorman Park in New York in 1958.
Culture in all its forms
Stadtglühen project manager Lars Templin gave a foretaste of the program: "This year, we are opening and closing the festival with dance performances. In between, for example, we will bring theater to the Schloss-Schönau-Park in Richterich on a specially built stage, play jazz and organ music in St. Severin and bring internationally successful bands to Aachen alongside local artists such as Ringo. There will be readings, DJ sets, poetry slams - a very varied program." A special highlight for Templin is the renewed cooperation with the open children's and youth center Space Walheim, which brings together children and young people from different nations and offers a wide range of opportunities in the form of projects and offers for meaningful leisure activities, regardless of religious affiliation or cultural background. "We are very happy about this new collaboration," said Templin
