Summer storms: operations, clean-up work, cemetery closed
The thunderstorm yesterday, Wednesday afternoon, July 2, also hit the Aachen city area. The fire department control center received a total of 1,000 calls, which led to a total of 500 deployments in the city and StädteRegion. In the Aachen city area, the colleagues from the professional and volunteer fire departments were called out to a total of 80 "storm operations". These included, for example, fallen trees, water on roads or in basements. The Heißberg cemetery is now closed due to broken branches and tree damage.
The clean-up work will continue at least until tomorrow, Friday. Teams from Aachen's municipal services are currently checking all public green spaces for obvious storm damage and are taking care of the removal of fallen trees. Trees are primarily affected in the districts of Burtscheid, Haaren and Eilendorf. In Robert-Schuman-Straße in particular, a number of lime trees were hit where large parts of the crowns broke off or trees fell down completely. The road had to be closed in both directions all morning to remove the trees. The clearing work will be completed shortly and the closure lifted. There were also fallen trees or broken crowns in the zoo, in Kaiser-Friedrich-Park, in Wurmbachtal, at Haaren cemetery and at the Eintrachtstraße music school. A crown broke off in Goerdelerstraße and fell onto a parked car. There was further minor damage to property, but no injuries were sustained.
Green spaces and parks are being checked, as are playgrounds, sports fields and street trees. Visitors to parks and playgrounds should take extra care at the moment. Citizens who wish to report fallen trees or broken branches can call the city's tree crew on 0241 432-18444. Reports of storm damage can also be sent by email to baumunterhaltung-stadtbetrieb@mail.aachen.de. The reports will be processed successively.
