Vote now: Which work of art should go on the Zeppelinstraße bunker?
As part of the district perspective for the future of Forst, the city would like to upgrade both the bunker in Zeppelinstraße and its surroundings. Residents from Unterforst expressed this wish to the administration during the previous participation process.
Two specific measures are now on the agenda. Firstly, the wall of the bunker in Zeppelinstraße in the direction of Mataréstraße is to be upgraded with a work of urban art. Four different artists with a connection to Aachen have each developed a design concept. Until Friday, February 7, people can vote online at www.aachen.de/zukunft-forst.de (under "A work of art for Forst") on which artwork they would like to see on the bunker wall. The artwork that receives the most votes will be installed on the bunker's façade by the artist. The participating artists are APHENOAH (Noah Kauertz and Oliver Hollatz), Jagama (Alex Shifferaw), Philip Wallisfurth and WHITE TRASH (Lasse Schulze).
To realize the design, smaller plants and trees along the bunker façade will have to be removed. The municipal works will take place on Monday, February 10. In preparation, some parking spaces will therefore have to be closed from Thursday, February 6, for the duration of the felling work. In addition, scaffolding will be erected for around five weeks so that the necessary preparatory work and the installation of the artwork itself can take place. The urban art project should be completed by the middle of this year.
The city would also like to upgrade the bunker façade along Zeppelinstraße and redesign it with a green façade. Raised beds and new seating areas in the front area will invite people to linger. By autumn 2025, this new offer for more quality of stay for people in the neighborhood should be ready.
All measures will help to beautify the bunker and its surroundings and bring more greenery to the neighborhood. The next street festival in Mataréstraße in 2026 can then take place against a completely new backdrop.
The district perspective for the future of Forst was adopted by politicians in November 2024 as the basis for the further development of the Forst district. Many stakeholders and institutions have been involved in the past process. Various campaigns and participations also took place in the Unterforst sub-area. There are many committed people in the district who are working to improve their immediate living environment.
