Road closures: Frogs and toads migrate to their ponds
The expected drastic rise in temperature will cause frogs, toads and newts to awaken from their winter torpor over the next few days. They will leave their winter quarters and migrate to the ponds where they themselves once grew up. This will be the case in the coming days and weeks, especially in the mornings and evenings at dusk.
The city of Aachen will therefore close some roads to through traffic temporarily or all day from Monday, February 24, until probably mid-April 2025. Anyone traveling by car must be prepared for closures on the following roads:
- Purweider Weg and Strüverweg will be closed to through traffic between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. over the next few days to protect migrating amphibians.
- In the Richterich district, Grünenthal Street will be closed all day by bollards for the duration of the toad migration between "Zehnthof" and the garages of Grünenthal house number 34.
- In the Haaren district, the road connection Waldstraße / Prunkweg will be closed to through traffic at the two hiking parking lots with a series of bollards until the end of the amphibian migration. The two hiking parking lots will remain accessible for walkers.
The animals sometimes have to cross busy roads on their migration to the spawning grounds. Without the appropriate protective measures, they are often run over in large numbers. In Aachen, this mainly happens on the following roads: Eupener Straße, Lütticher Straße, Grünenthal, Lemierser Berg, Purweider Weg, Entenpfuhler Weg, Hasselholzer Weg, Prunkweg, Broichweidener Weg, Strüverweg and Triftweg.
Amphibian protection fences are already in place on Lemierser Berg, Eupener Straße and Lütticher Straße. Installation is planned for next week on Entenpfuhler Weg. The Climate and Environment Department asks all drivers to drive with particular care and consideration on the roads and paths mentioned in the coming weeks until mid-April. By doing so, you will protect the animals and the amphibian conservationists who will be temporarily on duty along the roads and paths.
