Zeppelinstraße bunker: winner of the art competition has been announced!

The Zeppelinstraße bunker in Aachen-Forst is to become a colorful eye-catcher. To this end, a vote was held in recent weeks. In future, an urban art artwork on the bunker wall facing Mataréstraße is to enhance the building. 1169 people took part in the vote and chose a clear winner: Jagama (Alex Shifferaw) won over the majority with his motif "Forest with fox". More than 60 percent of participants voted for his design.

As part of the "Zukunft Forst" district perspective, the city wants to upgrade both the bunker in Zeppelinstrasse and its surroundings. Residents from Unterforst had expressed this wish to the administration during the previous participation process. The art competition is a project that aims to help increase the attractiveness of the area. A total of four artists with a connection to Aachen developed a design concept. In addition to Jagama, these were APHENOAH (Noah Kauertz and Oliver Hollatz), Philip Wallisfurth and WHITE TRASH (Lasse Schulze).

"We are thrilled with the variety of great designs submitted and are delighted with the high level of participation in the vote," says Annika Kubbilun, Head of Urban Design and Urban Renewal in the Department of Urban Development and Planning at the City of Aachen. "Many people, especially from Unterforst, are involved in the competition to help shape the future of Forst and its immediate surroundings," she adds and thanks everyone involved for their contribution.

The administration will now prepare the formal award and coordinate the concrete implementation with the winner. If everything goes according to plan, the urban art project should be completed by the middle of the year.

In addition to the art project, the city is also planning to redesign the bunker façade along Zeppelinstraße with a green façade. Raised beds and new seating will invite people to linger in the area in front of the bunker. Implementation is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025.
