The first municipal fountains are sent into "hibernation"
As every year in the fall, Aachen's first fountains will be sent into "hibernation" in the coming weeks. First of all, from the end of October, the fountains in Aachen's old town that are fed by stream water will stop bubbling. After that, the fountain service team from the city's building management department will take care of the other fountains one by one. By the end of November, all other fountains in the city that are fed by mains water will have been taken out of operation. The fountain hibernation period traditionally ends at Easter.
Then - in spring 2025 - the water fountains at Europaplatz are set to shoot up again. Due to a Regionetz measure on the canal, Aachen's largest fountain could not be operated during the past summer season. The building management team took the opportunity to carry out maintenance work on the fountain system at the same time as the Regionetz sewer work around the fountain. The fountain basin was properly sealed and the technical installations under the fountain were cleaned of rust and partially renewed.
The facilities at the Elisengarten (Elisenbrunnen and Kreislauf des Geldes) operate completely independently of frosty temperatures. These fountains are supplied with warm thermal water and can therefore also be operated during the winter months. This normally also applies to the fountain in front of the Neues Kurhaus. Due to renovation work starting soon on the sewage pipe in front of the building, this fountain will soon have to be taken out of service for the duration of the work.
Facility Management currently operates a total of 66 municipal water features.
