Saarstraße: City has white speed bumps installed for cycle lanes
The city is having new white speed bumps with mini beacons installed on Saarstraße to protect cyclists. They will replace the previous yellow speed bumps. The replacement is scheduled for the second week of the fall vacations from October 21.
The new speed bumps will remain in place until Saarstraße is permanently redesigned. The imminent installation of new crash barrier elements goes back to resolutions passed by the Aachen-Mitte district council and the mobility committee on August 31, 2023, when both committees decided by a majority to secure cycle traffic on Saarstraße with crash barriers until the road is completely redesigned.
The yellow speed bumps were installed when Ludwigsallee was fully closed and as part of the detour route via Saarstraße in fall 2020. During the construction work on Ludwigsallee, all motor vehicle traffic on Saarstraße was handled in two directions. To protect pedestrians and cyclists, the parking lane between Veltmanplatz and Sandkaulstraße was removed. Where cars had previously been parked on the roadside, a structurally protected cycle lane was created in the direction of Bastei. The sidewalk was to be reserved for pedestrians only.
Construction work on Ludwigsallee ended in May 2022. Motor vehicles no longer had to be diverted via Saarstraße. As before the construction work on Ludwigsallee, motor vehicle traffic should once again flow on two lanes to the Bastei junction.
However, the cycle lane originally marked on the carriageway on Saarstraße could no longer be reactivated. It was too narrow and lacked a safety separation strip from the cars parked at the side of the road. It no longer complied with road traffic regulations.
The city decided back in April 2022 to retain the cycle lane for a transitional period. This development was supported by a motion from politicians calling for a temporary cycling facility on Saarstraße in line with the cycling decision.
In August 2023, the Aachen-Mitte district council and the mobility committee decided that the temporary traffic guidance for cycle traffic on Saarstraße should become permanent. The upcoming replacement of the previous yellow speed bumps with white ones is the provisional conclusion of the transition to a permanent, structurally protected cycle lane.
