City center morning task force: new seating islands for Willy-Brandt-Platz
Since last weekend, there has been something new on Willy-Brandt-Platz: three green seating islands invite you to enjoy the autumn sun and take a relaxing break after a stroll through the city.
The new seating islands follow on from the temporary seating initially installed in August 2023. The team from the city's inner-city morning task force installed the temporary furniture to test out the new seating on the square. The task force includes experts from various departments - such as business development, urban design, city management, climate and environment - who work together to develop measures to improve the situation in the city center. "Temporary furniture has the advantage that we can try out which offers are well received. The furniture at Willy-Brandt-Platz quickly proved to be popular," explains Jalina Maaßen from the City of Aachen's Economic Development Department. Silvia Beretta from the Department of Urban Renewal and Urban Development adds: "We seized on this success and immediately applied for funding for a long-term solution. We are delighted that the new seating islands now enrich the square." The funding for the seating islands comes from the "Sustainable inner cities and town centers" program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The three seating islands consist of seven mobile elements and can be used flexibly so that they can also be set up at other locations in the city center. The durability and high quality of the products were at the forefront of the selection process. Intergenerational equipment with armrests and backrests ensures greater comfort for all age groups. The ensemble was planted with insect-friendly perennials and evergreen grasses to give the square a friendly face even in the cold season.
The former pilot benches are now being moved to Londoner Platz in Kleinkölnstraße and Kaiserplatz, where they will remain in use. At the beginning of next year, the square opposite the Kugelbrunnen will also be equipped with a large round bench financed by the same funding program, making it more attractive.
