In the project phase timeline, this project is in the construction planning phase.
The street perspective shows the wooden façade of the extension.

Building placement and urban integration

The new building to be erected is positioned in the gap between the gymnasium and the residential development on Zeppelinstraße adjacent to the school site. It takes up the height of the street frontage of the gymnasium and continues it. Some distance is still kept to the residential buildings. The new building also takes up the staggered heights of the gymnasium towards the schoolyard and blends into the ensemble.

Site plan of existing and extension building

Room program and utilization concept

The canteen will be located on the first floor. The dining hall will open up to the schoolyard with large windows and can also be used as a multi-purpose room. The new group rooms as well as the OGS team and administration rooms will be located on the upper floor. There will be no corridor. The rooms will be accessed via a multi-purpose/cluster room. Each floor will of course have the necessary sanitary facilities and ancillary rooms.

The building can be accessed independently of the rest of the school building. It is barrier-free thanks to the planned elevator, among other things.

Further project information

  • Building construction and materials

The building is to be constructed in timber for reasons of sustainability. Emphasis is placed on renewable and reusable materials.

The wood will be visible in the façade as well as in the ceiling beams, partly in the interior walls and also in the suspended ceiling in the dining room. The floors in the common rooms will be made of linoleum. The group rooms will have light-colored acoustic ceilings. The overall aim is to create a bright, natural and friendly atmosphere.

  • Technical equipment and energy supply

The entire roof of the building will be covered with a PV system in order to contribute to climate neutrality. To generate heat, the new building will be connected to the school's existing heating system in an interim phase. In the future, the entire school building will be connected to the planned district heating system.

With the exception of the dining room, the glazing is fitted with external blinds as sun protection. As the dining room will have many French windows, fixed sun protection in the form of vertical wooden slats will be used here in some cases. The common rooms will have decentralized ventilation units with heat recovery.

  • Greening concept

The roof of the building will be greened. Façade trees will be planted in front of two façades. The emergency staircase will also be planted with greenery.

  • Future viability and flexibility

For future developments, the possibility of adding a further storey has been taken into account in the planning and dimensioning up to service phase 3.

  • Reorganization and linking of existing buildings

By adding and removing non-load-bearing walls, the school will have a total of 12 classrooms, 3 multi-purpose rooms, 3 specialist rooms, 6 differentiation rooms, staff rooms, administration, janitor's office, checkrooms and ancillary rooms in the old building and pavilion once the project is complete. The janitor's office will be relocated from the basement to the first floor, the teachers' room and administration will be spatially linked and existing passageways will be removed. There are still 4 OGS group rooms in the pavilion.

  • Sustainability aspects

Sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in the City of Aachen's construction projects. The exemplary function as a public building owner, the desire for healthy buildings and economical and ecological operation over the entire service life lead to requirements that go far beyond those of an energy-efficient building.
Planning should therefore be based on the following assessment criteria:

    • Ecological quality
    • Economic quality
    • Socio-cultural quality
    • Technical quality
    • Process quality
    • Location features

The extension is responsibly aligned with the principles of future construction.
