The magnificent Neues Kurhaus has stood in Aachen's Kurpark for more than 100 years. The building has many stories to tell. Originally, the Maria-Hilf-Spital, one of Aachen's most modern hospitals at the time, was located on its site. In 2019, the Aachen City Council and the main committee decided to implement the renovation concept. In future, the New Kurhaus will once again be open to the public as an event venue. Let us take you on a journey through history and learn about the most important milestones of this venerable building - before the reopening of the Neues Kurhaus in 2026.

History: 1914 - A new spa hotel for Aachen
The creator of the new spa complex is the Munich architect and building contractor Karl Stöhr. There are two concert halls in Stöhr's Kurhaus. The building also has reading rooms, smoking rooms, function and games rooms and two ladies' rooms. Guests can choose to dine in the dining room, the wine salon or the patisserie. There is also an electrically lit wine and beer terrace, which is open to the concert square. The neoclassical New Kurhaus was opened on June 8, 1916 as part of a larger spa complex. It stands on the site of the Maria Hilf Hospital, which had to make way for this major new project.
From yesterday to tomorrow
The New Kurhaus is located between the park and the tennis court as part of a larger spa complex, which includes gardens in addition to the Wandelhalle, the Quellenhof and the baths. The gardens include the impressive driveway, the concert area to the east, the tennis courts behind the building and rest areas.
At the time, a lobby connected the New Kurhaus and the Palasthotel Quellenhof. It was 120 meters long and 10 meters wide and offered spa guests shelter in the cold season. During the Second World War, parts of the Neues Kurhaus were destroyed. This included the Wandelhalle, which was not rebuilt. In the 1970s, today's Eurogress was built there instead.

After the Second World War, the Neues Kurhaus reopened in 1953 with a carnival session and was used for events such as concerts and the awarding of the Order of the Beastly Serious.
From 1976 to 2015, it housed the Casino Aachen.
Numerous prominent guests attended the opening gala. Spielcasino Aachen quickly becomes one of the most popular casinos in the country. On average, over 1000 guests come to Aachen every day.
The renovation phase: rediscovering old treasures
The conversion to a casino in the late 1970s brought with it a number of structural changes. Marble surfaces disappeared under plaster and carpets, wall paintings behind mirrors and wallpaper. It is therefore not surprising that a number of architectural and artistic highlights, some of them spectacular, were discovered in the run-up to the renovation. For example, the "chain sky" in the large ballroom, an installation made of 40 kilometers of metal chain, almost completely concealed the impressive coffered ceiling. It has to be said, however, that the chain sky was also impressive.
What's coming: Hot spot for encounters
From the very beginning, the Neues Kurhaus has been a place where people meet - for cures, to celebrate, to play.
The city of Aachen aims to revive this tradition: The decision to use the Neues Kurhaus as an event venue in the future continues this central idea.
A hot spot for social encounters is being created here, where community can be experienced and strengthened. In future, the Eurogress Aachen will be hosting events of all kinds in the Neues Kurhaus. A place for new experiences of all kinds.
In order to turn the Neues Kurhaus into an attractive event venue for citizens, there was a selection process for the use of the basement. The aim was to find the best concept for a cabaret, club or disco use that would create a new attractive attraction in the former area of the vending machine casino. The politicians decided that Musikbunker e.V. would be the future operator.
