The "Vision Mobility 2050" is a central component of the transportation development plan (VEP) in Aachen. It was developed by the administration together with representatives from politics and associations, discussed with the public and adopted. It is still the guiding principle for future mobility in Aachen and is based on the year 2050.

In the 2013 vision, the state that mobility should have reached was presented in the same way for eight topic areas. In the 2013 public participation process, people were also asked what they thought of the vision and how they assessed the current situation in these areas. Following discussions in the expert commissions and the steering group, the mobility committee unanimously adopted the vision on 23.01.2014.
The vision makes no claim to completeness; it does not describe "the vision of the future" but rather "a possible future" as formulated by the institutions and citizens involved in Aachen as a desirable perspective.
The vision for each of the 8 topic areas
Electromobility is being developed and used in Aachen!
Aachen is a European competence center for electromobility. The means of transportation in Aachen should operate completely without fossil fuels. The energy required will be produced in a climate-neutral way - as far as possible in the Aachen region itself
Aachen: Model region for electromobility
Aachen is the German city with the lowest per capita energy consumption for mobility. The early and forward-looking switch to alternative drive systems has meant that mobility has remained affordable despite the immense rise in oil prices.
Electric vehicles are developed in Aachen
Aachen has taken on a pioneering role for alternative drive systems, starting with electromobility. The aim is to achieve the target set by the EU in 2011 of all cars in urban areas being locally emission-free by 2050 even earlier in Aachen.
Networked electromobility
With the boom in electric bicycles, which were still ridiculed in 2010, and the subsequent electrification of bus transport, Aachen was one of the first cities in Germany to succeed in networking all means of transport into an "electromobile mobility network".

Public participation in the Mobility 2050 vision
Around 500 Aachen residents took part in BürgerWerkStadt Mobilität in 2013 and around 270 people took part online from June 22 to July 14. Of the people who completed the questionnaire (paper, online) on the "Vision" and the "Situation today", over 80% agreed with the visions. The current situation was rated on a five-point scale (1 = very good, 5 = very bad) with an average of 3.2 to 4.0 in all subject areas.
A video was made on the day of the BürgerWerkStadt. Passers-by have their say and the main results of the participation phase are presented.
