Every journey, regardless of the means of transport, begins and ends with a footpath. One in four journeys in Aachen is purely on foot. Walking is the oldest, healthiest and most social form of mobility, it is available to almost everyone at all times, causes no emissions and takes up the least space.

Discover the city of Aachen - on foot.
Walking is the most natural way for people to get around. It is so natural that we are often almost unaware of it and perform it automatically. But walking allows us to explore the sights, smells, sounds and textures of surfaces in our surroundings. We can follow our own thoughts as we walk, but we can also perceive so many little things in our surroundings along the way that walking becomes an experience whenever we want.
Our pedestrian zones
Aachen has a dense network of interconnected pedestrian zones. This means that many destinations in the city center can be reached safely and conveniently on foot. Pedestrians are supported in their choice of route by destination signage.
"All-round green" and safety at pedestrian lights
At some traffic lights in the city center, the so-called "all-round green" has been installed, which allows pedestrians to cross the intersection on all sides at the same time. This project is supplemented by equipping pedestrian traffic lights with acoustic signals for the blind.
Emperor Karl leads through Aachen
Kaiser Karl shows you the most important sights of the city. Simply follow the seal that will accompany you on the circular route and is embedded in the sidewalk in many places. You can find more information in the brochure of the same name, which is available from the Tourist Info Elisenbrunnen for €3.95.
A green city walk through Aachen
On foot from Westpark through the Deliusviertel district past the Barbarossa Wall via the Lousberg park monument to Müschpark... For this walk, we deliberately chose a route that touches the heart of the city rather than the outskirts. It could encourage people who work in the city to perhaps walk part of the route during their lunch break. The chosen route benefits from the fact that the Lousberg Landscape Park borders directly on the city center. The route can also be walked in stages. It takes 15 to 20 minutes from the Westpark to Eilfschornsteinstraße. From there, with the short Lousberg crossing, it takes around half an hour to the "Kloster" stop in the Soers. With a more extensive visit to the Lousberg, it takes another 20 to 30 minutes.
Route Charlemagne
With the EuRegionale2008 project "Route Charlemagne", the city of Aachen is presenting itself more strongly than before as a European city of culture and science. With its individual stations, the route tells the story of Aachen as a European city, asks about the European future and points to the importance of science in the age of global developments. A central contact point at Katschhof will provide an overview of the Route Charlemagne in future.
Forest trails: hiking, walking, strolling and running in the Aachen Forest
In the south of Aachen, the Aachen Forest stretches from the Belgian and Dutch borders almost as far as the Voreifel - affectionately known as the "Oecher Bösch" by the locals. Here, anyone looking for exercise and relaxation will find an extensive and well-developed network of paths for walking, hiking, running or walking.
On a science tour with the Future Lab app
What connects Aachen Cathedral with multimedia specialists? The digital science tour through Aachen explains this and much more! The 1.3 km tour takes you to 13 stations in Aachen's city center. In easy-to-understand audio contributions and with the help of augmented reality, it presents the most exciting projects of Aachen's universities - from artificial mother-of-pearl and special vests for the visually impaired to the world champion in robot construction. Each station has its own theme: virtual worlds, engineering, communication, energy, mobility, medicine and many current topics of the future. The app also explains a mosaic façade that depicts a titanium surface magnified 14,000 times or takes you to curious places such as a historic steam engine. Steles and information boards on site point out what is on offer.
