The nomination and award recognize in particular the reactivation of vacancies, the creation of new educational and recreational quality in the city center and the cooperative project development with the City of Aachen as the developer.
In her laudatory speech, Cornelia Zuschke, jury member and alderwoman of the state capital Düsseldorf, emphasized the importance of cooperative and creative urban development. The Haus der Neugier is a pioneering example of the revitalization of inner cities and the conversion of former department stores.
The polis Award for City and Project Development was launched in 2015 by Wuppertal-based publishing house Müller + Busmann and has since been presented annually on the evening of the first day of the polis Convention in Düsseldorf in cooperation with the Bundesstiftung Baukultur. Of the 160 entries this year, three prizes were awarded in each of eight categories. "They are all united by a cooperative and creative approach to the urban context, with public (open) space, the recycling of areas and educational infrastructures becoming noticeably more important," according to the polis press release.
