In 2015, the United Nations adopted a total of 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda.

- They are intended to ensure that people, the planet, and prosperity are balanced and that no one is left behind.
- The 17 goals are interconnected; progress in one area also has an impact on other areas. For example, more green spaces and trees improve the urban climate and promote biodiversity (SDG 13, SDG 15), while also creating recreational spaces and improving people’s health and well-being (SDG 3, SDG 11)
- They apply to all countries around the world and serve as a guide for politics, government, business, and society in shaping a sustainable future.
In 2018, the Aachen City Council signed the model resolution “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”:
In this way, the city of Aachen is committing to sustainable development—both locally and globally—and demonstrating that it is taking concrete steps, within the limits of its capabilities, to make Aachen a sustainable and livable city.
