Commitment & Volunteering

Optimistic about Aachen's future together - New Year's reception 2026

The newly crowned Thouet dialect prize winners provided an atmospheric start: the children's choir from the cathedral singing school delighted the audience with the Aachen anthem "Urbs Aquensis" in Öcher Platt. The audience honored the performance of the young singers with standing ovations.

Optimism comes from commitment

In his welcoming speech, Lord Mayor Dr. Michael Ziemons explored the question of where the optimism that many people feel despite challenging times comes from. His answer: "Optimism arises wherever we experience humanity, wherever we can rely on each other." Volunteer work in particular makes a significant contribution to this. On behalf of all those involved, he warmly thanked those present and invited them to look to Aachen's future together with confidence. Ziemons also knows personally what he is talking about - he was a volunteer himself for many years, including in the Brander Library and in social projects at home and abroad.

"Aachen shows commitment" - registration started

Another highlight of the evening: the Lord Mayor gave the official go-ahead for registration for the "Aachen shows commitment" campaign day. On May 31, 2026, associations, initiatives and groups will once again transform the Stadtpark into a lively stage for the diversity of volunteering in Aachen.

Humorous thanks from Cordula Stratmann

Comedian and family therapist Cordula Stratmann provided a special surprise. With a lot of humor and personal words, she summed up her appreciation for volunteering: "You don't always see what you make possible - but without you, many things would not be possible!" Her conclusion made many people smile and nod in agreement: "Volunteering immediately lifts your spirits. From everyone!"

The New Year's reception once again made it clear how diverse, vital and indispensable voluntary work is in Aachen - and how much confidence it gives rise to for the future of the city's society.
