Climate Walks in Aachen: How the Urban Climate and Our City Are Changing
How does climate change affect our urban climate? And how can urban planning and design mitigate negative consequences in our city? Those interested can find answers to these questions during the climate walks on Wednesday, September 16, or Thursday, September 17. In just under two hours, Dr. Daniel Kelterbaum and Dr. Thomas Meister from the City of Aachen’s Climate and Environment Department, in collaboration with the NRW Consumer Advice Center, will lead participants through downtown Aachen and explain what influences our city’s climate.
The climate walks in Aachen illustrate the effects of climate change and adaptation measures at various locations: For example, a thermal imaging camera can be used to show temperature differences between different surfaces and materials. In this context, the walks explore how urban planning and design can help reduce heat and better prepare the city for heavy rainfall events. A particular highlight is the visit to the rooftop garden on the administrative building on Lagerhausstraße. Here, the importance of inner-city greening on the path to a climate-resilient city is discussed, and its positive effects on health and biodiversity are highlighted.
The climate walks are part of “Climate Adaptation Week,” taking place September 14–20. Organized by the Climate Adaptation Center at the initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety, this is the fifth edition of the event. The goal is not only to inform people and motivate them to participate and help shape the process, but also to make climate adaptation a tangible experience.
No registration is required to take part in a climate walk.
