A44: The traffic route near Lichtenbusch has been changed
The highway operator (Autobahn GmbH) has announced that, as of early Monday morning, October 26, the A44 highway near the Lichtenbusch interchange is open to traffic in the direction of Belgium on only one lane. Traffic is being routed via the lanes heading toward Aachen. As a result, only one lane will be available at times in the direction of Aachen as well. This work is expected to last until Saturday, October 31. Once the lanes heading toward Belgium have been relocated, traffic heading toward Aachen will resume on two lanes starting in early November. The on- and off-ramps at the rest area will remain open.
In addition, the ramp from Monschauer Straße onto the A44 in the direction of Belgium will be closed. A detour is signposted and runs via the Aachen-Brand interchange.
Changes to Traffic Flow
Traffic flow on Monschauer Straße will also be altered. Only one lane will be available in each direction. The on-ramp from Monschauer Straße to the A44 toward Aachen will remain open. The exits at the Lichtenbusch interchange from the A44 to Monschauer Straße will remain open in both directions.
The changes to traffic routing on the A44 and the closure of the ramp from Monschauer Straße onto the A44 toward Belgium are further signs that the first phase of demolition of the highway bridge at Monschauer Straße is about to begin. This bridge consists of two sections. The first section, on the lane heading toward Belgium, will be demolished in a few weeks and then rebuilt. Until the new structure is completed, all vehicular traffic on the A44 will be routed via the other section of the bridge toward Aachen and Belgium.
Autobahn GmbH will provide timely updates on further changes to traffic routing and the next construction phases on the A44 bridge near Lichtenbusch.
Background:
Autobahn GmbH is overseeing the replacement of the highway bridge at the Aachen-Lichtenbusch interchange. The structure was built in 1963 and, after more than 60 years of service, will be replaced by a new bridge by the summer of 2028.
