New Water Line at the Walheim Cemetery
After several months of construction, a new water line is now in service at the Walheim Cemetery. In the spring, it was discovered that the cemetery’s main water line was damaged and beyond repair. As a result, the utility company and a civil engineering firm laid a new supply line to the cemetery. The subsoil posed a particular challenge: Since the new pipe trench runs through slate rock, the rock had to be loosened meter by meter with a jackhammer and then removed with a suction excavator.
Now that the new water line is up and running, the temporary water barrels at the cemetery can gradually be removed. Employees of the Aachen Municipal Utilities had been refilling them regularly during the summer months so that visitors could water the graves.
In the coming weeks, the cemeteries will be prepared for winter; then the water lines will be shut off. These are so-called “summer lines,” which are not frost-proof. The water fountains must also be protected from frost, as they could be damaged at low temperatures. In the spring, when temperatures rise again, the lines will be turned back on.
