Regionetz is strengthening the power grid in Aachen
Regionetz is upgrading Aachen’s power grid so that the Melaten Campus can be further expanded and the development of Campus West can proceed. A new, approximately 4.3-kilometer-long cable connection between the Goebbelgasse substation on Prager Ring and the West substation on Kühlwetterstraße will create additional capacity for future electricity supply.
The cable will be pulled largely through an existing, empty steel conduit. This eliminates the need for extensive civil engineering work along the route. Eight installation pits are required, in which the individual cable sections will be connected. All roads will remain open to traffic. In some places, roadways will be narrowed, and bike paths and sidewalks will be rerouted.
Work will begin in early November 2026 on the private property at the corner of Prager Ring and Schwarzer Weg. By the end of the year, additional excavations will take place on Prager Ring near Gut-Dämme-Straße, at Krefelder Straße 22, and at Kühlwetterstraße 43.
Starting in January 2027, additional installation pits will be constructed at Krefelder Straße 212, under the old Tivoli pedestrian bridge on Krefelder Straße, at the Bastei, and at Saarstraße 16.
Regionetz points out that all measures have been coordinated with the relevant authorities and institutions.
