Bridge in Walheim in need of renovation is demolished
The bridge in the forest area near the Walheim leisure area needs to be replaced. The team from the road maintenance and bridge construction department of Aachen's municipal services identified serious age-related damage to the structure during a general inspection in 2024. Temporary safety measures were taken to ensure road safety. However, repairing the superstructure is no longer economically viable. A bridge will therefore be installed.
The old concrete bridge on four steel girders, which crosses the Inde, was originally designed as a vehicle bridge and used to transport the quarried limestone. It is now being replaced by a new steel bridge. The existing supports and abutments are to be retained and upgraded for the new superstructure. The width of the pedestrian path on the future bridge structure will be 1.60 meters.
The work will begin on Wednesday, April 1 and is expected to take two months.
The affected area will be closed to pedestrians during the dismantling and new construction; a circular route will not be possible during this time. The bridge is part of the Eifelsteig. However, the Eifelsteig is not affected as a detour route already exists. This has been set up because of the bridge in Hahn, which was destroyed by the flood.
