Burtscheid bridge: Load restriction to 7.5 tons
The Burtscheid bridge is in a poor structural condition. This was the result of a special inspection by the road maintenance and bridge construction department of Aachen's municipal services. The bridge's drainage system is dilapidated, causing the deck to become soaked. The leaks detected lead to cavities in the concrete of the structure. During the special inspection, damaged concrete parts on the underside of the deck, which were threatening to collapse onto the railroad tracks below, were chipped off and removed.
Short-term protective measures will be taken: For structural reasons and to maintain road safety, the edge area in particular must be further relieved of traffic. The carriageway will therefore be narrowed in both directions. The cycle paths will be retained. In addition, a load restriction of 7.5 tons will be imposed for safety reasons. Relieving the bridge is necessary from a structural point of view, but does not affect the progress of the damage.
