Play, Listen, and Discover: Sound Festival at the Blücherplatz Music School
On Saturday, July 11, the music school will transform Blücherplatz and its surroundings into an open-air music venue. Under the theme “play along – listen – discover,” the new music festival invites people of all ages to not only listen to music but also to actively experience it.
On several stages throughout the building, on the “Klanginsel” in the courtyard, and at the nearby Depot, visitors can enjoy a varied program featuring choirs, orchestras, bands, ensembles, and numerous hands-on activities. The focus is on connection, curiosity, and making music together.
In addition to traditional concert formats, the Klangfest offers many opportunities to get involved: Anyone interested can sing along, dance along, improvise, play in the project orchestra, or even conduct a youth symphony orchestra. Workshops, sound activities, and open events invite participants to experience music up close and try it out for themselves.
“Music brings people together—regardless of age, background, or prior musical experience. With the Klangfest, we’re opening up the music school to the entire city and inviting everyone to explore together, try new things, and experience music with one another,” says Anna-Mareike Vohn, the music school’s deputy director.
Families with young children will also find plenty of activities to explore and participate in at the Klangfest. In addition to activities focused on early childhood music education, a book drive in the “Freiraum” invites visitors to purchase and donate selected children’s books for the “hoppípolla” playroom for the youngest children.
A distinctive feature of the festival is the connection between the various venues. With the “Klangfähre” (Sound Ferry), which is accompanied by music, even the walk between Klanginsel and Depot becomes part of the program. Small ensembles accompany visitors on their way through the festival.
The “Klanginsel” in the music school’s courtyard is the centerpiece of the festival. Open-air concerts, hands-on activities, the “Inselküche” serving Belgian fries and cold drinks, and plenty of opportunities to socialize create a summery festival atmosphere for the whole family. In the evening, the day winds down with the Big Band Jazzotic and the “Jazz on the Sound Island” program.
The Klangfest features ensembles from the music school as well as numerous collaborations with schools and educational institutions throughout the city. The festival is intended as an invitation to the entire community to discover the diversity of music education and experience it together.
Admission is free.
