In the coming weeks and months, an exciting time will begin again for many families in Aachen as they start looking for the right school. This decision is an important step for both parents and children, whether the children are starting school for the first time or transitioning to a secondary school. Should we choose the elementary school just around the corner, or might another school’s educational approach be a better fit for my child? Elementary school is behind us—what’s next? Will it be a Gymnasium, a Gesamtschule, or perhaps a Realschule or Hauptschule after all?

At www.aachen.de/schule, families can find all the latest information on information sessions and open houses at Aachen’s schools, as well as information on enrollment periods, if available. The site lists elementary schools, secondary schools, public schools, and privately operated schools.

Elementary School Registration Period for the
2027–2028 School Year: The registration period for elementary schools begins this year on Monday, November 2, and ends on Friday, November 13. Children can be enrolled at the nearest municipal elementary school, municipal denominational elementary school, or an elementary school of their choice.
