City of Aachen continues to support independent culture with 1.35 million in 2026

The City of Aachen supports the cultural work of the so-called independent scene with the "Cultural work outside municipal institutions" (KAStE). KAStE funding is possible for applicants from Aachen or people who work in Aachen. Among other things, the funded projects must focus on artistic content and be open to the public.

As of September 30, 2025, 100 applications had been received by the City of Aachen's Kulturbetrieb. At its meeting on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the Culture, Theatre and VHS Operating Committee passed resolutions on grants from KAStE. Specifically, 613,380 euros were approved for major projects and annual programs, 245,480 euros for venues and 61,200 euros for investments.

To date, 37,000 euros have been made available for the "small KAStE" (applications up to 5,000 euros). In addition, there were 19 applications from previous years for a total of 342,500 euros.

"The independent cultural offerings are a mainstay of Aachen's cultural landscape. I am delighted that thanks to the dedicated work of the jury, which is made up of equal numbers of representatives from the independent scene and cultural policy, we have once again succeeded in presenting a balanced and exciting funding tableau to the Culture, Theatre and Adult Education Committee for a decision," emphasizes Heinrich Brötz

"The quality and diversity of the applications submitted to the City of Aachen's culture department testify to the importance and significance of the independent scene for our city. Together with the expert jury, consisting of politicians and the independent scene, we have succeeded in distributing the funding in a balanced and fair manner. The early decision in January allows us to contribute to planning security for the artists. I am particularly pleased about this, as profession and vocation often complement each other," explains Irit Tirtey, Commercial Director of the Kulturbetrieb.

Rainer Beck, Head of Event Management in the City of Aachen's cultural department, emphasizes: "The independent scene is an important and enriching part of Aachen's cultural landscape. Unfortunately, the realization of artists' creative ideas is often a financial challenge. I am therefore very pleased that many ambitious projects can be realized with the help of KAStE funding from the City of Aachen."

Applications can still be submitted for projects within the scope of the remaining amount.

Further information can be found under the search term KAStE Aachen. Consultation appointments can be arranged or open questions clarified via the e-mail address KAStE-Kulturfoerderung@mail.aachen.de or by telephone on 0241-432 4945.
