30 years of JuSi - anniversary concert of the youth symphony orchestra

The JuSi youth symphony orchestra celebrates its 30th anniversary with a festive concert in the main hall of Theater Aachen. The JuSi is a joint cooperation between the Aachen Symphony Orchestra and the Music School of the City of Aachen and brings together around 50 young musicians from the region.

Under the direction of Alexander Scherf, the orchestra members will present a varied program with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Maurizio Cazzati, Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, Antonín Dvořák and Aram Khachaturian on Sunday, 1 March at 6 pm. Pia Vohn (trumpet) and Haowen Li (double bass) will perform as soloist and soloist, demonstrating their skills in two extraordinary concert pieces.

The Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1996 on the initiative of members of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra, above all Walter Mengler. Together with music teachers from Aachen's grammar schools and instrumental teachers from the region, an initial project was realized under the name "Orchesterwerkstatt". The musical direction was taken over by bandmasters from Theater Aachen, including Jeremy Hulin, Volker Hiemeyer and Mathis Groß.

A special milestone was a concert tour to Arlington (USA) in 2001. In October 2010, the sponsorship between the Aachen Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Symphony Orchestra was officially confirmed as part of the tutti pro initiative.

Since 2024, the JuSi has been run jointly by Theater Aachen and the Music School of the City of Aachen and works under the direction of Alexander Scherf as a youth symphony orchestra that rehearses weekly. In addition to its own concerts, regular rehearsal and concert visits to the Aachen Symphony Orchestra as well as rehearsal camps and orchestra trips are an integral part of the ensemble's work and promote both the musical development and the sense of community of the young musicians.
