It’s never too early to start reducing waste. Even the youngest children should learn to produce as little waste as possible in their daily lives. That’s why first-graders in Aachen are once again receiving practical and eco-friendly lunchboxes at the start of the school year. The Aachen Municipal Enterprise provides these reusable lunchboxes to all interested schools every year.

Anne Lehnen is organizing the distribution this year and is pleased with the high demand: “This year, we’ve received registrations from 36 schools in the city of Aachen and are providing about 2,000 lunchboxes.” In addition, each child will receive a class schedule. “We want to raise children’s awareness of sustainability as early as possible. Of course, we hope that this will also lead to no—or at least fewer—plastic bags, lunch bags, and aluminum foil being used.”

Waste prevention is a regular topic of discussion not only among first-graders but also in many school projects at Aachen’s schools and daycare centers. One such project is the campus tours for preschoolers, which are offered regularly on the premises of the municipal utility company on Madrider Ring.
