Summer Technology Camp: From a Wooden House to a Sustainable Energy Marvel
A chance to get away from the daily grind and spend an exciting time with peers, learning through play and creating something on their own. This was recently made possible for 12 ninth-grade students from Aachen and Heinsberg at the summer technology camp organized by the Aachen Chamber of Crafts and the Aachen University of Applied Sciences—with support from the zdi Network Aachen & Heinsberg District.
From August 17 to 21, the young participants transformed a wooden house into a sustainable energy marvel. They installed solar panels, learned about modern craftsmanship and high-tech innovations, and worked together as a team to solve challenges. This gave the participants exciting insights into technical professions, academic programs, and future technologies—in a hands-on way and without the pressure to perform. They were accompanied by professors and students from Aachen University of Applied Sciences (FH Aachen) as well as master craftsmen and women from the Aachen Chamber of Crafts (HWK Aachen).
What made the camp special: The teens spent an entire week together in Simmerath—with lodging and meals at the guesthouse, exciting activities, and plenty of time for fellowship, new friendships, and unforgettable experiences. At the same time, they learned about various career and academic paths and received guidance on possible options after high school.
“It’s wonderful to see the enthusiasm and creativity with which the young people approach the tasks. The Technology Summer Camp uniquely combines hands-on experience, future technologies, and sustainability, while also giving young people the opportunity to explore different career and academic paths,” says Eda Körner-Tezer, project coordinator at zdi Aachen & Kreis Heinsberg.
The camp was organized by the Aachen Chamber of Crafts and the Aachen University of Applied Sciences. In addition to the Education Office of the Aachen Urban Region and the Sparkasse Community Foundation, the event was supported by the zdi Network Aachen & Heinsberg District, which is affiliated with the City of Aachen’s Economic Development Agency.
