Freedom of Expression Week: Debate with the Aachen Debating Club
How does a fair debate work? How can people exchange differing opinions in a civilized manner? As part of Freedom of Expression Week, the Aachen City Library, in collaboration with the Aachen Debate Club, invites the public to a debate.
On Wednesday, May 6, experienced debaters from the Aachen Debate Club will discuss a current social issue and demonstrate how structured debates work. Visitors will experience how arguments are constructed, positions are challenged, and different perspectives are weighed against one another.
The audience will not just listen but will be actively involved: At the beginning and end of the debate, participants can raise their hands to signal their own position and thus track whether opinions change over the course of the discussion. Afterward, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversation about debating as a form of exchanging views.
This event is part of the nationwide Week of Freedom of Expression, which advocates for the importance of free speech and a culture of respectful discussion. The Aachen City Library sees itself as an open space for exchange and encounter.
