New green accent at Europaplatz
Following the completion of the civil engineering works, a total of 16 new trees will be planted in the adjacent areas around Europaplatz from next Tuesday, April 28, on behalf of the City of Aachen's Climate and Environment Department. The selected tree species is "Liriodendron tulipifera", also known as the tulip tree, which will enrich the cityscape with its striking appearance.
In addition to the greening of Europaplatz, one of Aachen's central entrance gates, new tree beds are also being created in other locations. These will be equipped with different tree species and suitable underplanting to increase diversity and aesthetics in the city.
The renovated Kurfürstenstraße is being planted with string trees, which are considered particularly climate-resistant and can therefore defy climate change. In Eginhardstrasse, rock pears will soon beautify the surroundings. They are characterized by their compact growth and abundant flowering, which makes them a valuable nutrient tree for insects. The new tree grates in Försterstrasse will be planted with Japanese ornamental cherries. These trees are characterized by their elegant growth form and impressive blossoms, which will harmoniously underline the appearance of the listed facades. Schildstrasse will also receive new greenery after the renovation: two narrow hornbeams will be planted in the narrow street, while a chestnut tree will be planted in the central Schildplatz square. In addition, a lime tree will be planted in the adjacent Schützenstraße.
These diverse planting campaigns not only create more green accents in Aachen, but also improve the microclimate and quality of life for people in the city.
