STAWAG searches for geothermal energy in the region
The energy supply company STAWAG will start its seismic investigations in the Aachen area at the beginning of December 2025. This will enable it to search for geothermal energy in the region. Special vehicles, vibro-trucks, will be used in the search. STAWAG informs people in the region about its upcoming investigations:
- In Stolberg on Saturday, November 22, from 12 to 4 p.m. on Kaiserplatz
- In Aachen-Brand on Tuesday, November 25, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the edge of the weekly market.
A real vibro-truck will be on hand at the events in Stolberg and Aachen-Brand. Experts will be on hand to explain how the vehicles work and what the data is needed for. Questions from interested people are expressly welcome.
"Our vibro-trucks send sound waves into the ground, which are reflected by the different layers of rock," says Gorig Quaas, geologist and project manager for deep geothermal energy at STAWAG. "This works in a similar way to an ultrasound scan and helps us to create an accurate picture of the subsurface."
The vibro-trucks move slowly along pre-planned lines. They stop every 20 meters or so for a few minutes to take measurements. This may result in noticeable vibrations and noise in the surrounding area; brief traffic disruptions are also possible. STAWAG asks for your understanding.
The measurement route is 39 kilometers long and stretches from Würselen to Stolberg, from Kornelimünster to Haaren and from Aachen to Eschweiler. The investigation period is two to three weeks.
Geothermal energy for an independent heat supply
With deep geothermal energy, the energy supplier aims to make the regional heat supply more independent, renewable and climate-friendly. It supplies heat around the clock, uses natural energy from the earth's crust and can supply many households in the long term. The current investigations are the first important step: they provide data on possible, suitable geological structures - i.e. on the rock layers that contain hot deep water.
