Europe on Tuesday: Supply chains under the microscope
The Due Diligence Act has been in force in Germany since January 2023 and the EU Supply Chain Act since July 2024. The EU law will be applied in stages: However, a few days ago, the EU Commission proposed lowering the requirements of the EU Supply Chain Directive and giving companies more time to implement it.
On March 18, the "Europe on Tuesday" series will focus on the Supply Chain Act and take a closer look at the topic of "clothing" as an example. In hardly any other industry is there such a gulf between appearance and reality as in the fashion industry. The glamor and trends of fashion are often offset by human rights violations and the exploitation of millions of people, especially women, in the countries of production. Fashion is also one of the biggest drivers of global environmental and climate change.
The discussion evening presents the ecological and social problems along the textile supply chain and explains how the German and European Supply Chain Act is intended to contribute to greater corporate responsibility. In addition, possible courses of action for citizens in the Aachen area will be presented. The event will kick off at 6.30 p.m. with a small free "FAIR tasting": delicacies from the Aachen World Shop will be available to try and enjoy free of charge.
The speakers for the evening are Ingrid Krümmel-Seltier from the Greenpeace Group Aachen and the Aachen FAIRhandeln alliance as well as Marijke Mulder from Femnet, an association in Bonn that campaigns for women's labor and human rights. Mona Pursey from the One World Forum Aachen will moderate the event. Questions from the audience are welcome. The discussion will take place in Aachen's Grashaus, Fischmarkt 3, and will also be broadcast online. Free registration is available on the "Europa am Dienstag" website at www.europa-dienstag.de . The event series is jointly organized by the Europe Direct Information Centre, the European Classroom of the Route Charlemagne and the Bischöfliche Akademie Aachen.
