Memorial service for deceased people without relatives

Patron Mayor Sibylle Keupen invites you to a memorial service for people buried "ex officio" at Hüls Cemetery, Wilmersdorfer Straße 50, on Thursday, June 26, from 5 pm. After the ecumenical service, grave candles can be laid. Friends, acquaintances or former neighbors, but also relatives of the deceased as well as Aachen citizens who wish to pay tribute to the deceased, most of whom died alone, are very welcome. In the period from the beginning of August 2024 to the end of May 2025, the public order office buried 118 people "ex officio".

Year after year, people die in the city of Aachen who live without relatives or whose burials are not arranged by relatives for various reasons. The Department of Safety and Order takes care of the burial of the deceased and places them in the mourning meadows of Hüls cemetery.

In 2012, representatives of the two large churches, together with employees of the public order office and the cemetery administration, founded the funeral culture working group, which has set itself the task of giving a dignified farewell to people who have died without relatives. From the very beginning, this also included remembering the names of the deceased, which have been read out annually at the public memorial service since 2013.
