Connecting-Verbinden: Pupils design pedestrian underpass
Colorful and inviting: this is how the underpass in Richterich now welcomes all pedestrians. As early as 2023 and 2024, pupils from the Heinrich Heine Comprehensive School (HHG), under the direction of artist Uta Göbel-Groß, began transforming the walls of the pedestrian underpass in Aachen-Richterich into a colorful work of art. Under the special aspect of "Connecting-Verbinden", the pupils have continued the mural design of the pedestrian underpass these days.
The foundation for the continuation was laid by a visit from pupils from Cape Town in February as part of the 25th anniversary of the Aachen-Cape Town partnership. In an art workshop, they jointly developed ideas for the wall design. The HHG pupils have now put these ideas on the wall. The pupils painted, rolled, drew and implemented the themes either individually or as a team. The themes are life in the world, animals and people. Symbolic and playful elements find their way into a wealth of images on the walls of the underpass: colorful, large, expressive, impressive. Each pupil designed according to their own inner images, ideas and handwriting. The pupils report that this work on the approximately 60 square meter wall surface, which was also physically demanding and took place far away from the normal school day, was fun and that the artistic results became visible quite quickly. The joint work on the wall also resulted in teamwork, which was characterized by mutual advice and support: that also creates a bond.
The pupils and teachers are proud of the joint result. The Aachen-Richterich district council made the project possible by providing financial support.
